The Subaru’s slightly larger size gives it more room than the V60, but Volvo buyers are also looking for a quieter and more refined experience. The Outback offers the same cladded-up station wagon format as the Volvo, but without the luxury feel and fancy design touches. Some may consider the Subaru Outback a competitor to the Volvo V60 Cross Country, but it’s both larger and far downmarket from Audi and Volvo. While the A4 Allroad’s base price undercuts the V60’s, it requires at least one option package to get the same standard features as the Volvo, making the real-world price difference between the two cars a wash. The company also builds the midsize V90, which competes with the larger, pricier A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain. Station wagons’ popularity has been dwindling ever since the advent of the SUV and crossover but Volvo is one of the last holdouts, still offering a wagon shape in the compact luxury market. Wagons may be a vanishing breed, but this one still has plenty to recommend it. Of all the cars on sale in the U.S., only Audi’s A4 Allroad is similar and Volvo dropped the non-Cross Country standard V60s in 2021. While its S60 sedan sibling vies directly with a flotilla of small premium cars, the Volvo V60 stands alone with its distinctive station wagon body.
